Open to all students, regardless of school enrollment. Priority is given to PS 3 families. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Families in the West Village searching for a French school in NYC will find a strong bilingual pathway through EFNY at PS 3.
To help you find the right French lessons for your child, EFNY classes fall into two categories:
For bilingual children who already speak and understand French comfortably and can follow a French-only class.
Focus: reading, writing, grammar, oral expression, and thematic/cultural subjects taught entirely in French.
For children who are new to French or still building foundational language skills.
Focus: speaking, listening comprehension, vocabulary building, and confidence through interactive, playful learning.
Children are grouped by their prior exposure to French to ensure the right level of support and challenge.
The théâtre class can only be selected in combination with the Thursday French for Native Speakers.
French for Native / Fluent Speakers
A playful introduction to theater entirely in French. Through storytelling, guided improvisation, and collaborative imagination, students co-create characters and short scenes. This creative process helps them strengthen verbal expression, vocabulary, and confidence — all while having fun in full French immersion.
Through theater games, short scenes, and lively group activities, students learn to express themselves confidently and clearly in French. This class is perfect for children who want to develop oral fluency, articulation, and public-speaking skills while having fun. Francophone and advanced French learners are welcome, and their language abilities grow naturally throughout the class.
French as a Second Language
This class introduces young learners to spoken French through simple, age-appropriate activities. Students learn to express short phrases in everyday situations through stories, creative projects, songs, and games. A gentle and natural introduction to French. Children are grouped by their prior exposure to French to ensure the right level of support and challenge.
For students who already have basic French comprehension and oral skills. They expand vocabulary and develop language abilities through engaging, playful activities adapted to their age. A lively learning experience that builds confidence and motivation. Children are grouped by their prior exposure to French to ensure the right level of support and challenge.
French for Native / Fluent Speakers
This class is designed for bilingual children who already understand and speak French. All activities are conducted fully in French and focus on developing clear, rich, and organized oral language. Students learn to listen attentively, understand messages, and respond appropriately. They are introduced to the alphabet, early phonics, and the first steps of reading and writing in French, laying the foundation for confident literacy in both languages.
For francophone students who are comfortable speaking and reading in French. Classes take place in full immersion. Students explore more complex texts, reinforce essential grammar, spelling, and conjugation, and begin writing short texts with clarity and precision.
For fully fluent French speakers. The course focuses on oral and written expression, grammar, spelling, and conjugation. Students read longer, varied texts and produce creative writing (dialogue, description, portraits, short fiction). Independent reading is strongly encouraged.
