Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve grouped our most common questions by topic and program type, so you can quickly find the answers you need for EFNY’s in-person and online French classes.

In-Person French classes

To enroll your child in an existing EFNY program at an NYC public school, please complete the registration form and contact us with any questions. EFNY may evaluate your child’s level of French proficiency before assigning them to any of the level-appropriate classes.

Our in-person after-school French classes start in September, and each group will only run if at least 8 students are registered. Signing up early not only holds your child’s spot but also boosts the likelihood that your chosen class will be confirmed. Should a class be canceled because it doesn’t meet the minimum, families will receive a full refund.

Registrations are for the full school year, as our program is built on an annual curriculum. Requests from new families to register after September may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please email efnyinscription@gmail.com to inquire.
We do not offer trial classes. If you have any questions about the program, please contact efnycurriculum@gmail.com.

At some schools, EFNY offers classes for children learning French as a foreign language. Classes are adapted to the age (from Kindergarten through 5th grade) and French level of the students. Please check your school’s page to see if these classes are available.

Yes. All motivated students are welcome to participate in EFNY programs. Including bilingual students who do not yet write in French.

EFNY does not offer discounts but may provide financial aid on a case-by-case basis. Please contact

Please contact efnyoffice@gmail.com to discuss available payment options.

In case of an exceptional school closure, the EFNY class is canceled.

Please see our Payment Policy for our complete cancellation and refund policy.

All EFNY programs follow the same curriculum structure, but each school has its own schedule, class times, and mix of levels depending on its community. Your child’s teacher will share the specifics for their class at the start of the year.

In our academic classes (French for Native Speakers and French as a Second Language), students receive age-appropriate homework to reinforce what they’ve learned in class. For Kindergarten, for example, we may suggest that parents read the letters or words of the day with their child or listen to a French song together. For older students, homework may include reading a short text, answering questions, solving a written riddle, writing a short passage, reviewing conjugation or vocabulary.

Your teacher will send you an email after the first two or three weeks of class to specify what supplies are needed and to describe the program for the year.

EFNY is not a school and therefore does not issue any diploma. We can, however, provide a certificate of participation to confirm your child’s attendance in the program.

In September, January, and June, EFNY teachers send an email to parents outlining the class program and structure, along with the skills and topics covered. Between these updates, teachers are always available to answer any questions.

For academic classes, EFNY also organizes two parent-teacher meetings—in November and April—held on Zoom.

EFNY doesn’t provide written progress reports. However, if your child is enrolled in French for Native Speakers or French as a Second Language classes, you’ll have the opportunity to meet with their teacher during two parent-teacher conferences (in November and April). During these meetings, the teacher will share updates on your child’s progress and offer guidance on how to continue supporting their French learning.

The classes are organized by school year and start in September.

EFNY’s primary mission is to teach French to our students. However, in some schools we also offer French-language classes in World Discovery, Calligraphy, Theater, Art, and more.

Each school has a different organization. You’ll receive an email from your parent coordinator before the first class of the year with all the practical details.

Please inform your child’s EFNY teacher as soon as possible. If lateness becomes frequent, EFNY may charge late fees, as noted in the registration contract.

No, EFNY does not provide snacks to students. Since our classes take place after school, please send a healthy snack that your child can eat before class begins.

Online French classes

Our online French classes are open to students from 3rd through 11th grade. Class placement is based on both age and French proficiency level, and new students may be evaluated to ensure they’re matched with the right group.

We mainly offer classes to residents of New York. If you’re located in another state and need help identifying a FLAM organization near you, we’re happy to assist.

Classes begin in September. Each class requires at least 6 enrolled students to open. Early registration helps secure your child’s place and increases the chances that your preferred class will run. If a class cannot open due to low enrollment, families will receive a full refund.

Our classes follow a full-year curriculum. If you wish to join after the school year starts, please email efnyinscription@gmail.com—late registrations are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
We do not offer trial classes. If you have questions about the program, please contact efnycurriculum@gmail.com.
EFNY provides limited financial aid on a case-by-case basis. Please contact efnyoffice@gmail.com for details.

Teachers send email updates in September, January, and June with an overview of what students are learning in class. We also organize two parent-teacher conferences in November and April. Between updates, they’re always available to answer your questions.

EFNY is not a school and does not issue diplomas. However, we can provide a certificate of participation confirming your child’s attendance.

Classes take place via Zoom. Students should have access to a computer or tablet with a camera and microphone.

For student privacy, our live classes are not recorded.

Students need a reliable internet connection, camera, microphone, and a quiet space for participation. Headphones are recommended. At the start of the year, your teacher will email you details about any books or learning materials needed; these typically cost no more than $50.

Our current online programs are intended for students who already speak French fluently. Some beginner classes are also offered in-person at NYC public schools. Check back for new class offerings, or feel free to reach out if you have questions about upcoming options.

Because online groups are small, we don’t offer refunds or make-up sessions for missed classes, but teachers may share class materials and assignments.

If you still have questions about the program, please contact efnyops@gmail.com.
